This was Special Night (matt black) applied to the sides and underside and matt dark green and dark earth covering the upper surfaces. Transported to Woodford for assembly and testing, it was taken on charge by the RAF on 22nd October 1942 and became one of the first Lancasters flown by 460 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force from Breighton, Yorkshire as part of Bomber Command. Initially coded UV-G, it was directed to change to AR-G in May 1943 but retained the G, having already become known as ‘G for George’.
