Although only 45 were used by the United States during World War II, the P-80 Shooting Star's production total would eventually near 2,000 aircraft by the end of the Korean War. Clocked at 594 mph (one of the fastest aircraft of its day) and armed with six 12.7 mm machine guns, two 454 kg bombs and eight rockets, many of these single-seat fighter bombers ended their days as unmanned target drones. The P-80 was the first jet fighter produced by Lockheed.
