WINGS OVER HOUSTON P-51 MUSTANG #2 in a Series Wings Over Houston Air show has been the source of a series of limited edition die-cast airplanes celebrating the annual air show at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas for five years starting with the October air show in 1994. This P-51 Mustang represents the second in the series. Actually this aircraft is a reconnaissance version of the P-51 Mustang known as the "Ace-In-The-Hole" F-6D. The North American P-51D, the best fighter of World War II, was also modified for recon duties with the addition of cameras in the rear fuselage. This model represents "Madam X ", an F-6d of the 111th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 69th Tactical Reconnaissance Group, 9th Air Force at the end of World War II. Historical Note: The 111th Squadron landed at Oran, Algeria during "Operation Torch" in November 1942. After supporting the II Corps in Tunisia, the Squadron flew support for General Patton's Seventh Army in Sicily and General Clark's Fifth Army in Italy, flying early models of the P-51.Two-Plane squadron flights from the 111th were attacked by several twenty-plane German formations. The 111th Squadron pilots shot down fourteen German planes with no losses. The 111th Fighter Squadron, a part of the 147th Fighter Group remains on active Air Defense Alert today at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas flying F-16A (ADF) "Falcons".
