The Douglas A-1 Skyraider (formerly AD Skyraider) is an American single-seat attack aircraft that saw service between the late 1940s and early 1980s. The Skyraider had a remarkably long and successful career; it became a piston-powered, propeller-driven anachronism in the jet age, and was nicknamed "Spad", after the French World War I fighter. It was operated by the United States Navy (USN), the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and the United States Air Force (USAF), and also saw service with the British Royal Navy, the French Air Force, the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF), and others. It remained in U.S. service until the early 1970s.

  1. "The Blue Plane" 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Dec 2022

During the Korean War, AD Skyraiders were flown by only the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps and were normally painted in dark navy blue. It was called the "Blue Plane" by the North Korean enemy troops.

Hobby Master has given us another smartly painted Douglas Skyraider in the iconic blue paint scheme, representing the USMC in Korea. The model has the minimum amount of graphics and only mentions the Marines on the bottom of the Port wing. It also sports a tally of mission symbols on the left side of the fuselage just below and behind the cockpit. While the Skyraiders look amazing in the gray and white Navy schemes, it's good to get a dark navy blue one once in a while!

Aikens' Airplanes does a great job in packing these models for the trips, and they waste no-time "Lollygagging" in getting the models sent. Thanks to the Boss and his Gang in keeping the die-cast models going where they belong, to collectors and their collections!
