World wars trigger technical advances, and two results from the fracas of the forties were the T-2 tanker and the DC-3 airplane. The T-2 was good; the DC-3 was great. Many survivors of both categories still continue to serve in the shadow of newer, bigger, faster equipment. One example is Chevron Standard's DC-3 having a quarter-century life of more than 16,000 hours of workload of 18-hour, 3000-mile round trips from Calgary to Eagle Plains facing the Artic Ocean. The bush flight supported a 42-man seismic crew working on the west side of the lower Mackensie River. The plane was flown with full gross payload and required several fuel stops en route. It barely met the requirements without providing for any buildup of supplies nor for any mechanical interruptions such as metal fatigue in the rugged old ship.
