VAW-124, known as the "Bear Aces," is a United States Navy squadron that operates the E-2C Hawkeye, an all-weather tactical airborne early warning and control aircraft. Commissioned in 1967, VAW-124 plays a crucial role in fleet defense, providing surveillance, early warning, and command and control capabilities for naval operations. The E-2C is equipped with a distinctive rotating radar dome, allowing it to detect and track aircraft and maritime targets over vast distances. VAW-124 has participated in numerous deployments and operations, contributing significantly to carrier strike group effectiveness and enhancing situational awareness in complex combat environments.

Designed as a replacement for the E-1 Tracer, the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye was first flown in 1960. This all-weather tactical Airborne Early Warning aircraft is the only aircraft-carrier capable aircraft to carry a large rotating dome, which houses the antennas for its long-range radars. Used primarily by the US Navy, the E-2 provides surveillance and airborne early warning of anti-ship and enemy aircraft attacks. Sometimes called "The Hummer" because of its distinctive engine sounds, the E-2 is one of only two propeller airplanes that currently operate from aircraft carriers. The E-2 is still undergoing upgrades, with the modern E-2D taking its first flight in August 2007.

E-2 Hawkeye: The Hummer You Don’t Mess With (08:05)
The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is the Navy's all-weather, carrier-based tactical battle management airborne early warning, command and control aircraft. The E-2 is a twin engine, five crewmember, high-wing turboprop aircraft with a 24-foot diameter radar rotodome attached to the upper fuselage. Designed in the 1950s, the E-2 first flew in 1960 before entering service in 1964. The E-2 has been in production, in one variant or another, continuously since 1960 – giving the E-2 the longest production run of any carrier-based aircraft ever. The E-2, which uses twin turbo-prop engines, also has earned the nickname “Hummer”, due to the distinct humming sound the prop engines make – which is easily discernible from the roar of a carrier’s jet engine fleet. In addition, the sequel of new movie “Top Gun: Maverick”, featuring E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, even for a brief moment, makes a strong impression.
