In 1969, the US Navy established its Fighter Weapons School (NFWS), more popularly known as TOPGUN, at NAS Miramar, California. Its objective was to develop, refine and teach air combat maneuvering tactics and techniques to selected fleet air crews flying against aggressor squadrons. The aggressor aircraft are flown by TOPGUN instructors in a way that simulates the tactics and capabilities of air forces deemed most likely to be a threat to the US. Adversary aircraft are typically painted to simulate aircraft from air forces that pose a likely threat to the US at the time of training. In 1995, F-14A BuNo 159885 was painted in a blue-splinter paint scheme, representing an Su-35 Flanker of the Russian Air Force.

This is my first Century Wings replica. Overall I am quite pleased with this model. I’m not familiar with aggressor F-14’s but love their looks. The Calbre Wings versions have slightly different markings and paint work so I choose Century Wings because I preferred their look. I did not check for accuracy of paint and markings since I choose this one purely for aesthetics. A few hits, three piece display stand came in five pieces, glued broken pieces back together, no problem. Starboard missile pylon also needed to be glued back on. Afterburner nozzles loose but once displayed on stand, the stand holds them in place. Interior of afterburner ring left in the white, should be blacked out. Finally, ejection seats are loose. This is why these nice, sometimes expensive, scale models are recommended for us older kids, because we have the ability to fix any minor flaws.
