HOBBY MASTER AIRPOWER SERIES

The Hawker Hurricane was the first British single-engine fighter and the first single wing aircraft with retractable landing gear as well as an enclosed cockpit and 8 machine guns. The Hurricane went into operational service in December 1937 with the RAF 111 Squadron. The Hurricane is usually over looked as a major player in the BoB because of the Spitfire but 80% of the 1,792 German aircraft shot down were because of the Hurricane. There were 14,533 Hurricanes produced in all variants.
James A.F. MacLachlan was a Squadron Leader assigned to the No. 1 Squadron at RAF Tangmere. In 1941 MacLachlan was severely wounded and as a result had an arm amputated but 7 months later returned to flying. He is credited with 16 victories over German and Italian aircraft of which 7 were night victories, 2 over Malta and 5 over France. In May 1942 MacLachlan became a night fighter ACE with the 5 victories over France while partnered with Karel Kuttelwascher. These victories earned MacLachlan the DSO.

  1. AN EXCELLENT REPLICA OF “ONE ARMED MAC’S HURRICANE 5 Star Review

Posted by on 6th May 2024

James MacLachlan was one of the RAF’s most famous pilots in the 1940-1943 time frame. After losing his left arm as a result of air to air combat over Malta, MacLachlan quickly demonstrated he could still fly with an artificial arm. He re-mustered as a night intruder pilot and squadron commander flying dangerous low level night missions over occupied Europe in the Hurricane depicted by this model. By the end of 1942 he had added five night kills to his daylight total of eleven. After a 6-month goodwill tour in the USA, MacLachlan was reassigned to the Air Fighting Development Unit (AFDU) and , accompanied by Geoffrey Page, a Battle of Britain pilot who was shot down and badly burned in 1940, flew low level “Rhubarb” sorties in the early model Allison Engined Mustang. It was on such a Rhubarb, accompanied by Page, that MacLachlan met his end.

An excellent biography, of MacLachlan, “One-Armed Mac” by Brian Cull & Roland Simon’s was published by Grub Street in 2003 and should be available on AZN. A good description of MacLachlan’s last flight can be found in Geoffrey Page’s Book “Tale of a Guinea Pig”.

  2. Very, Very Good Product 4 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Feb 2023

Hobby Master's 1/48 Hurricane is a very, very good product, and I will purchase more HB products. My only suggestion to them is that a product list should be included in the box, as well as simple instructions for the assembly. The only reason I cannot give this product 4 stars is because GMP planes - the absolute best individual products - would not be able to then be rated.
