Design work on the Me 262 actually began as early as September 1939, though its development was protracted. It wasní«í´t until July 18 1942 that the first turbojet-powered Me 262V-3 made its maiden flight. Capable of a top speed of 870km/h, the pair of axial-flow compressor type Junkers Jumo 004B turbojets were notoriously unreliable, and their average lifespan was just 25 hours.
