Malcolm Scott Carpenter, a dynamic pioneer of modern exploration, has the unique distinction of being the first human ever to penetrate both inner and outer space, thereby acquiring the dual title, Astronaut/Aquanaut. Carpenter is best known as one of the original seven astronauts selected for NASAåÕs Project Mercury in April 1959. Carpenter flew into space on May 24, 1962, atop the Mercury-Atlas 7 rocket for a three-orbit science mission that lasted nearly five hours. He named his craft Aurora 7, after the goddess of the dawn, noting that Project Mercury represented the dawn of the space age, which would bring light and knowledge to the world. His Aurora 7 spacecraft attained a maximum altitude of 164 miles and an orbital velocity of 17,532 miles per hour. This photograph is personally signed by Astronaut Scott Carpenter. Certificate of Authenticity included.
