The MiG-29 is a twin-engine supersonic fourth generation air superiority jet fighter developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970’s. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983 and still is in use with them as well as equipping over twenty four other countries over the years. The NATO designation for the MiG-29 is Fulcrum and it was designed to counter the American F-16 and F-18. The MiG-29 was first seen in the West in 1986. The MiG-29 (9-13) is designated the Fulcrum C.
On April 26, 2012 the Polish Air Force assumed responsibility for NATO’s Baltic air policing mission while based at Lithuania’s Šiauliai AB. NATO countries rotate through this mission as part of the NATO defence agreement of the region. The Polish Air Force assumed the 4 month mission from the German Air Force JG71 Squadron and deployed 4 MiG-29s as well as 8 pilots and 91 support personnel. One of the MiG-29s was 4103 (c/n 2960526301/3705) from the 41st Tactical Squadron (41.ELT - 41 Eskadra Lotnictwa Taktycznego) of the 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork.
