Historical Note:  The SE5a was one of the most famous, and effective, British fighters of the First World War.  Serving with the RFC from March 1917, the SE5a was well liked by its pilots.  Able to engage the German machines on an equal footing the RFC’s airmen were able to strike back at the previously superior German aircraft.

After the war the SE5a was quickly removed from the RAF’s inventory, replaced by more capable types such as the Sopwith Snipe.  However, the SE5a had also found a home with an American unit, the 25th Aero Squadron.  Still warming up on the type at the end of hostilities, the unit did not see any combat, flying only a small number of patrols before the armistice.  The aircraft of the 25th were not supplied with the Lewis gun normally mounted on the top wing, this was supplied after the war, and so they went on their missions with just a single Vickers gun as armament.  This machine was flown by Lt. John C. Rorison, previously of the RAF. After the war the USAAS continued to use the SE 5a as a pursuit trainer.

These Cogi airplanes are detaied, are to scale and exact color of the aircraft WW1 pilots flew. Nice collector items for adults.

  2. Great detail on a WW1 model airplane 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Aug 2020

This is my first Corgi WW1 model. When I opened the box for the first time, I was quite pleased with the amount of detail on the Corgi 1/48 scale model. Nice bright colors on the insignia, rubber tires, wood like propeller, and real wire rigging! I am very pleased with my purchase. I will probably buy a few more Corgi WW models. The purchase was also quite reasonable. Shipping time was great too. I ordered the model on a Saturday and it arrived on the following Wednesday. All-in-all, the whole transaction through Aiken's Airplanes went very smoothly!

  3. Gone But Not Forgotten ... 4 Star Review

I am a World War II enthusiast purchasing die cast airplanes. But to really get a sense of the dawn of warplanes, you need to start collecting the World War I examples. The Corgi Aviation Archives series has really nailed the authenticity of early aircraft. This series goes beyond just simple construction but brings out the intricate structure of the airplane. You can't go wrong with purchasing this plane.
