B658 Nightfighter, Home Defense, No.61 Squadron, England 1918 - The third SE5 produced (A4563) became, in effect, the prototype S.E.5a, with a 200-hp Hispano Suiza power plant and shorter wingspan. The S.E.5a went to No. 56, No. 40 and No. 60 Squadrons in June 1917, and by the end of the year Nos. 24, 41, 68 and 84 Squadrons had taken them on charge. After troubles with the reduction gear of the Hispano Suiza, together with a general shortage of these power plants, the direct-drive Wolseley Viper became the standard S.E.5a power unit. The S.E.5a built a fine reputation for strength, performance and general flying quality, which together with the Sopwith Camel were the main reasons for the Allies gaining and maintaining air superiority during 1918. Some aircraft were fitted with four 25-lb (11 kg) Cooper bombs under fuselage racks. The S.E.5a will always remain one of aviation's great warplanes.

Intro To The Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a Biplane Fighter (04:44)
This is a 360° walk-around introductory video to the Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5a -- one of Britains best fighter aircraft of World War One. This example is a 100% accurate reproduction built by The Vintage Aviator Ltd in Wellington, New Zealand. For more info see: http://www.thevintageaviator.co.nz The S.E.5 was first used in action by No 56 Squadron RFC on the 22nd April 1917. By the end of 1917 a further seven RFC squadrons had been equipped with the type which by then had developed into the ‘5a’ variant (with a 200hp engine instead of the earlier 150hp Hispano-Suiza). -- http://www.aviationfilm.com Copyright © 2019 Historical Aviation Film Unit This video material may not be reproduced in any form (except on other websites as an unedited embedded video which links back to to this YouTube master), without the written permission of the Historical Aviation Film Unit. 1. 1/48 Scale WWI Airplanes 5 Star Review

Posted by on 15th Feb 2021

I recently entered into collecting the Corgi 1/48 Scale WWI Airplanes. The models are detailed replicas and probably some of the finest models Corgi has made. The coloring of the aircraft is delightful and worthy of displaying.

  3. WW I Night Fighter 4 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Sep 2012

This is my last purchase of the WW I Corgi Aviation Archeive because now I have them all ! This plne has a really odd look to the paintjob. I've no doubt it's accurate, but it is really a queer bird. The molding/casting is Corgi quality all the way. Sure looks odd next to the other SE-5a's.
